A comfortably loose training uniform is usually preferable. It should sit well but allow for freedom of movement. If you know your size, stick with what is working best for you. Simply look at the size tag on the old uniform. Otherwise move up or down a size to best suit your needs. For example if you are 178cm/ 5ft10in tall, size 5 uniform will be a freer fit than size 4, and so on up or down depending on your size.

HAKAMA SIZES rely on leg length   
Usually:   
  • Size 7 Hakama goes best with Gi Sizes 7 to very tall
  • Size 6 Hakama goes best with Gi Sizes 6 to 7 uniform
  • Size 5 Hakama goes best with Gi Sizes 5 to 6 uniform
  • Size 4 Hakama goes best with Gi Sizes 4 to 5 uniform
  • Size 3 Hakama goes best with Gi Sizes 3 to 4 uniform
  • Size 2 Hakama goes best with Gi Sizes 2 to 3 uniform


You should select or adjust the Hakama length best suited to you. For ceremonial purposes very long is OK. For active training the hem should be at least 4 inches (10 centimetres) above the ground.
